David Powell, SHP
For David Powell, building a school isn’t just about building walls, it’s about creating spaces that help students and teachers create a supportive community. “It’s not just about how their head learns, it’s about how their heart learns,” says Powell. That makes him the perfect choice to design the new Peck Expeditionary Learning Academy which will house K-8 students in a building made of 5 learning communities that bring together similar grade levels encouraging students to connect and collaborate with each other.

Each learning community will include spaces for student project displays and hands-on learning. “Following the feedback we heard from students, staff and the community, we aimed to create a high-quality, student-focused environment that will foster an entire generation of life-long learners,” explains Powell.
SHP’s focus on building community extends to the workplace. The company is headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, but recently opened their first office in Greensboro. The firm has been in the design, architecture and engineering business for over 122 years and has 113 creative minds at work on designs around the nation, including 109 LEED registered and certified projects.
